The technique of block prints is believed to have originated in China some 4,500 years ago. Over the years the art form trickled into Indian subcontinent and was mastered like no other. Although recorded history of block printed fabrics in Indian subcontinent dates back to the Indus Valley civilisation, around 3500 to 1300 BC, it was under the Mughal empire that block printing flourished in India, intricate floral motifs introduced under the empire continue to be extremely popular.
Block printing is a labour-intensive process, it all starts by preparation of the fabric to be printed, the fabric is first washed free of starch, tie-dyed if required and then washed & sun dried. The blocks are made using woods such as teak, sycamore and pear are first made using?ÿchalk paste or a pencil on paper. Post this, they are soaked in oil for?ÿ10-15 days to soften the timber. Once the blocks are ready, fabric is pinned to printing table & blocks are dipped in the colour and pressed on to the fabric. Post this fabric is sun dried, steamed, washed in water, dried in the sun again, and lastly, being ironed.
In India, Block Prints originated in Rajasthan, and was then adapted by Gujrat, followed by many other states. Today, India is one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of this eco-friendly technique.
