Chikankari is a very delicate and intricate shadow work type of embroidery that dates back as early as 3rd century BC. Although there are various explanation behind the evolution of word ƒ??Chikankariƒ?, one of the prominent theory states that the term evolved from the Persian word ƒ??Chakinƒ? or ƒ??Chakeenƒ?, which means creating delicate patterns on a fabric. The work initially done on white yarn, colourless muslins known as Tanzeb now has application on georgette, chiffon, cotton and other fine fabric. Depending on the pattern intricacy and size of the piece, the embroidery process alone can take up to 10 days to complete and is done by artisans that can be trained up to 20 years!!!
The work now synonymous with the city of Lucknow, is believed to be extensively promoted by Mughal Empress Noor Jahan, wife of Emperor Jehangir for her love of the craft. Today Chikankari is estimated to employs more than 5 lacs artisans and continues to be pride of India.
